Premier place to stay in the city

February 2008

Britain's biggest hotel chain has been confirmed as the operator of a new £10m hotel being built in Hull.

Premier Inn, part of the Whitbred Group, will run the new 136-bedroom hotel, which will form the first phase of the £100m Boom development on the east bank of the River Hull.

It is thought about 40 full and part-time jobs will be created at the hotel.

Today's announcement comes just weeks after construction work started on the tower street site. It is due to be completed by the end of the year.

The hotel will eventually sit above a new multi-storey car park designed to cater for guests and residents living in the new Boom scheme.

The scheme is being brought forward by Pure Urban, a consortium of local firms including Horncastle PLC, Scruton and Co. and Venture Business Parks Limited.

Ian Hodges, of Horncastle PLC, said: "One of the key attractions for Premier Inn in deciding to operate this hotel is that it is close to the city centre and The Deep.

"As a result, the hotel will be able to attract business trade during the week and tourists at the weekends."

Alex Flach, construction director at Whitbred, said:"The decision to operate the site as a Premier Inn is a result of extensive research.

"We feel not only will the district benefit from the new development, but so too will people visiting the area as they can enjoy high-quality accommodation at a great value price."

Premier Inn currently runs two hotels in the area - at Kingswood and North Ferriby.

The group operates more than 500 hotels in the UK and more than 35,000 rooms.

Although best known as a budget hotel chain, it also boasts a number of large city centre premises.

Exact details of the new Hull hotel have yet to be revealed but it is expected to include a restaurant and bar area overlooking the River Hull and The Deep as well as meeting rooms.

Along with the new car park, the six storey venue is being built on the site of a former Royal Mail sorting office.

City Council leader Councillor Carl Minns said he was looking forward to the hotel being built.

He said: "It's good to see the buildings going up on this site and it's another important step on the road to developing the city centre.

"The banks of the river will be unrecognisable in five years' time and I can't wait for the work to be completed."
