Booming Skyline

March 2008

Rising on the east bank of the River Hull, this development will be the latest multi-million pound addition to the city's ever changing skyline.

The vast steel framework is the first visible sign the long awaited £100m Boom development is starting to take shape.

When complete, it will include almost 600 apartments, offices, shops, restaurants and bars.

The first structure being built is due to house a £10m hotel and multi-storey car park.

High-speed construction techniques mean the first phase should be completed by the end of the year.

Andrew Horncastle, a director of joint venture company Pure Urban, said: "The contractors building the hotel and multi-storey car park are making good progress and are working on the structural steel frame and foundations.

"The hotel bedrooms are of modular construction and are being constructed in China.

" The first bedrooms will be delivered by the end of May and all the bedrooms are due to be fully installed by mid-July.

" We are looking to complete the hotel and car park later this year."

Contractors Multibuild experimented with similar modular units on a number of hotel projects before landing the contract for the Boom hotel, which will be operated by the Premier Inn chain.

Multibuild chief executive Mike Peden said: " This is a very exciting project as it marks the first use of our new modular system outside of the trials, which we have successfully completed."

Alongside the hotel scheme, demolition contractors are working to clear the former Atlantic warehouse building in Tower Street.

The warehouse site is earmarked for the Boom's first  two residential blocks.

Mr Horncastle said: " We anticipate the demolition works to be completed in six weeks and this will be followed by an archaelogical evaluation and further site survey work.

"Tenders have been put out for the construction of the first apartment building, which has been purchased by Delph Property Group.

"We hope to be able to commence work on this building in the autumn. Work on the next building will follow."

As previously revealed by the Mail, the development will also include at least 50 affordable apartments aimed at first time buyers struggling to get on the property ladder.

A £6m footbridge will link the development and the city's old town.
